Our nervous system comprises of many parts including the Central Nervous System (CNS) and Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). CNS is controlled by the conscious mind. ANS is controlled by the sub-conscious mind. ANS regulates our heart and respiration rate, temperature, endocrine or hormonal system and immune system.

ANS has two branches – Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) and Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS).

PNS promotes the “rest and digest” or “rest and relax” functions whereas SNS drives the “flight or fight” response.

During a Reiki healing or a therapeutic massage the PNS gets activated. This is also one reason why the stomach starts working towards the end of a session, showing the relaxation that is happening in the nervous system. The stuck energy has shifted and moved and that makes those grumbling sounds in your stomach.

A regular Reiki healing session or a massage is therefore highly beneficial for the nervous system and to maintain well being.

Another conscious way to activate the PNS is by doing deep diaphragmatic breathing. Making it a part of your daily routine will go a long way helping you with maintainng a general sense of well-being and managing yours stress levels.
