Winter Immune and Gut Strengthening Tips | Ayurveda Mandala

Winter can be quite challenging for our body and mind. The cold, damp weather puts a stress on your system. If the immune is not strong, we are likely to attract viruses and catch a cold or flu. There are ways to strengthen your immune system. I would like to share some Ayurvedic Wholefoods Wisdom that can be applied to your daily life with ease. Our gut health is directly related to immune health. So we need to keep that in mind while making food choices. Below are few immune building tips:

  • Drink warm lemon water in the morning.
  • Adding fermented foods like Sauerkraut and Kombucha are highly beneficial to your gut health thus enhancing your immune health.
  • Drink Golden Immune Elixir with warming spices – fresh or powdered turmeric, cardamom, cinnamon, anise and pepper
  • Miso soup – mix a tsp of miso paste and 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar in vegetable broth or chicken broth and drink a small cup before breakfast and dinner. It not only nourishes the cells but acts as an appetite stimulant.
  • Add bitters to your diet – dandelion in salad and tea, swedish bitters or bush bitters elixir.
  • Have green smoothies that are warming by adding ginger, turmeric, cinnamon
  • Use warm spices in any way possible –  cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, clove, turmeric, black pepper, fennel, fenugreek. These can be used to make tea, in cooked food, added to smoothies and fresh juices
  • Regular exercise works wonders for body and mind. A combination of brisk walk, resistance training, yoga or pilates is great. Most important thing is to keep  up the regularity and do some form of exercise daily.
  • Eating small amount of garlic is good as the weather cools down, however it is important to note that garlic reduces blood pressure. It also has sulphur. Some people might feel the the effects, so tune in to your body and decide how much is just enough.
  • Regular warm oil massage will improves the circulation and activate the lymphatic system, thus keeping your immune strong.
  • Get plenty of sunshine to keep your Vitamin D reserves full (an important immune booster) and mood uplifted.
